Backup & Recovery Readiness Review

We test the restore, not the backup: a real recovery exercise plus an RTO/RPO gap report against what the business actually expects.

What you get

  • A real restore testOne agreed system recovered to an isolated target, timed, with every surprise documented. This is the deliverable most environments have never had.
  • Backup inventory and chain validationEvery job, what it covers, what it silently skips, and whether the chains would actually replay.
  • RTO/RPO gap reportWhat the business assumes about recovery time versus what the current setup can deliver, in one uncomfortable table.
  • Ransomware resilience findingsImmutability, offline copies, and whether the backup credentials would fall with the domain.
  • A remediation planThe shortest path from the recovery you have to the recovery you assumed you had.

What we need from you

  • Read-only access to the backup platform (Veeam, native SQL/Oracle, M365 backup, or cloud snapshots).
  • An isolated restore target with enough space for the agreed test system.
  • One hour with IT and thirty minutes with a business owner on recovery expectations.

Timeline

Days 1–2

Inventory, chain validation, and picking the restore-test candidate with you.

Days 3–4

The restore test, timed and documented, plus ransomware resilience review.

Day 5

Written report, gap table, and walkthrough.

Who it's for, and who it isn't

A fit if
  • Backups are green every morning and untested every year.
  • An auditor, insurer, or board member just asked "how fast could you recover?"
  • You survived a near-miss and want the next one boring.
Not a fit if
  • You already run scheduled restore tests with documented timings. Keep doing that; this would duplicate it.
  • You need a full DR site design. That is project work this review would scope honestly.

Common questions

Will the restore test touch production?

No. The test system is recovered to an isolated target you designate, and we agree the candidate together before anything runs. Production is read-only throughout.

Which backup platforms do you cover?

Veeam, native SQL Server and Oracle backups, Microsoft 365 backup tools, and cloud-native snapshots across AWS and Azure. Mixed setups are normal and priced as one review.

What if the restore fails?

Then the review just earned its fee, because that failure was going to happen anyway, during an incident, with the business watching. The report documents exactly where the recovery broke and what fixes it.

Is one restore test enough?

One test proves whether the pipeline works today; it does not keep it working. A quarterly restore cadence is part of our Remote DBA and Co-Managed IT retainers, and the report shows what that cadence should cover.
