Field notes

Short, opinionated notes from real projects. The kind of advice we'd give a friend before they signed a contract with anyone, including us.

Speed beats smarts in lead follow-up

We can build a chatbot that holds a genuinely good conversation. It rarely matters. What moves the number is response time: the lead who hears back in a minute books the call, and the one who waits until morning already called someone else. Build the fast path first. Make the bot smarter later.

Not everything belongs in the cloud

Plenty of our migration conversations end with us talking a client out of moving something. A ten-year-old app with four users and zero growth doesn't need a cloud architecture. It needs a backup plan and a retirement date. Migrate what earns its keep, retire the rest, and pocket the difference.

Property software is secretly accounting software

Building OpenDoor PMS taught us this early. Rent, deposits, owner draws, and 1099s are a bookkeeping problem wearing a real estate costume. Tools that bolt payments onto a listings database break the first time an owner asks for a clean statement. Start with a real ledger and everything downstream gets simpler.

Disagree with one of these?

Good. Book a call and argue with us about it. That conversation is usually more useful than a pitch.
